Earlier in the week – The federal government released groups of illegal immigrants from custody across the country Monday at the same time the White House was making its case that impending budget cuts would harm efforts to protect the border and enforce federal immigration laws.
Advocates reported “waves” of illegal immigrants being released from at least three detention centers in Texas, Florida and Louisiana.
U.S. Immigration Customs and Enforcement confirmed the release of some illegal immigrants Monday night but would not say how many or from which detention centers. (more…)

WASHINGTON DC – Chuck Hagel won confirmation Tuesday to become defense secretary over objections to his views on Middle East security and the administration’s handling of an attack on a U.S. consulate in Libya.
On a 58 to 41 vote, the Senate confirmed the former GOP senator as four Republicans joined 54 Democrats in approving Hagel, ending a nearly two-month battle that included an unprecedented filibuster against the nominee.
The four Republican senators voting in favor were Thad Cochran (Miss.), Mike Johanns (Neb.), Richard C. Shelby (Ala.) and Rand Paul (Ky.). All 41 no votes came from Republicans. (more…)

(Via Mediaite) A pro-Democratic group has drawn sharp criticisms after it attacked Sen. Mitch McConnell’s (R-KY) Asian wife, former Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao. The super PAC Progress Kentucky has demonstrated in front of McConnell’s home and offices, but raised the most ire from critics after tweeting that Chao “has the ear of [Sen. McConnell]” which could “explain why your job moved to China!” Kentucky’s WFPL recaps the incident. (read more)

(Via The Hill) A Texas Republican on Monday said President Obama’s gun control campaign is a fraud based on fake messages over Twitter.
Rep. Steve Stockman (R-Texas) accused Obama of trying to make support for his position look stronger than it really is by flooding Twitter with messages from people who don’t exist.
“Obama’s anti-gun campaign is a fraud,” Stockman said. “Obama’s supporters are panicking and willing to do anything to create the appearance of popular support, even if it means trying to defraud Congress,” he added. “I call upon the president to denounce this phony spam campaign.”
An enterprising person put together this very excellent video after Vice-President Biden gave his famous advice telling women to buy a shotgun. This ‘in your face reality’ is exactly the right approach to take when progressives give advice.
One of the most common ideological binding threads of progressive thought is they never actually offer fact-based advice. Progs have opinions and various thesis that run through their thought patterns as synapses fire with random illogical patterning.
Non-progs reconcile irrational thoughts with prudent consideration, accepting they may not have all the answers. Progs typically just espouse whatever first comes to mind off the top of their heads – that’s why they are prone to advancing emotional legislation.
(WaPo) — A proposed ban on military-style assault weapons faces a key test vote as early as Thursday when the committee considering gun control legislation is scheduled to decide whether to refer the proposal to the full Senate.
The Senate Judiciary Committee released a list of four bills it plans to consider at a business meeting Thursday morning, but Senate Republicans could use the panel’s procedural rules to delay the meeting for a week. As with most Senate proceedings, the list of bills could change — some might be dropped or others added to the list — but the Senate is clearly on the verge of beginning the formal process of reviewing legislation introduced in the wake of the Newtown, Conn. school shooting.
