Mass beheadings reported in northern Iraq as al-Qaeda forces take Mosul and Tikrit, Saddam Hussein’s home town – LIVE LINK UPDATES HERE

Tikrit, Iraq (AFP) – Militants took control of the Iraqi city of Tikrit and freed hundreds of prisoners on Wednesday, police said, the second provincial capital to fall in two days.

“All of Tikrit is in the hands of the militants,” a police colonel said of the Salaheddin provincial capital, which lies roughly half way between Baghdad and Iraq’s second city Mosul which fell on Tuesday.

A police brigadier general said that the militants attacked from the north, west and south of the city, and that they were from powerful jihadist group the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

A police major said the militants had freed some 300 inmates from a prison in the city. (more…)

Against the backdrop of current events this little snippet will not reach the attention of too many people.   However, it’s lack of visibility in the news is not to say the inherent message is not resoundingly indicative of something newsworthy.

When Egypt held their 2011  “election” after the fall of Hosni Mubarak, the Muslim brotherhood worked diligently to elect their President, Mohammed Morsi.

Upon hearing of the Brotherhood victory – President Obama promptly called Morsi.

Actually, he interrupted a vacation specifically to call Morsi on the day of his victory, offering congratulations and an immediate invitation to the White House.

But for Mohammed Morsi the actual trip to the White House would have to wait. There was another world leader he needed to meet first.

Mosul – The city General Petraeus cleaned up and used as the model  for how to deal with counter insurgency – Has fallen.

“Mosul now is like hell. It’s up in flames,” said Amina Ibrahim, who like many others was heading for northern Iraq’s more stable Kurdish-controlled zone. “I lost my husband in a bomb blast last year, I don’t want my kids to follow him.”

The assault on the city of Mosul, 225 miles north west of Baghdad, saw the Iraqi army retreat to the outskirts after a sustained assault by men armed with heavy machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades. The chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee raised questions Sunday about the Obama administration argument that Congress wasn’t informed about the prisoner swap for Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl because he might have been killed if the deal was made public.

The California Democrat told CBS’ “Face the Nation” that she and the committee’s top Republican, Georgia Sen. Saxby Chambliss, had been briefed previously about the operation and kept that information confidential.

“We understand the security of that, we have never violated that,” said Feinstein, who has raised doubts about the so-called “credible threat” on Bergdahl’s life several times since Congress was briefed about his June 5 release in exchange for five Taliban detainees at the U.S. prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Actually, this lap of luxury approach might just work. If they get them used to exclusive indulgences the Taliban 5 might just get so used to it they’ll never be able to think about living in the rough rock tribal regions of Pakistan/Afghanistan ever again.

The White House and State Department can claim they “don’t know” the details, but the military did; and thanks to Big Mama Tea, and WikiLeaks, you can read the military intelligence reports for yourself and see exactly what was going on in the area around his unit.

The Taliban captured him a day after he walked off base.  Ironically while he was taking a sh!t, and they didn’t let him wipe himself.  Initially the Taliban requested a 15:1 swap and money.   Afghan tribal leaders acted as liaisons in the initial days of Bergdahl’s capture.

It’s really eye opening to read the actual Military Intelligence surrounding the initial search for him.   Everything his squad has said publically over the past week is confirmed in these original 8 pages of military reports.
