March 2, 1836: The Republic of Texas is Declared!

Texas Independence Day

March 2, 1836

When I was a mere lad, Texas Independence Day was celebrated in schools with patriotic songs, readings of the Declaration by schoolkids and grave lectures on our role as Texans by our teachers. Even the Mexican kids participated, because anyone who’d read the  hallowed rolls of the Alamo and Goliad dead knew that there were plenty of martyrs with Spanish surnames. We also knew of Lorenzo de Zavala and Juan Seguin, both Texian heroes of the Revolution.

Juan Seguin

It was understood by the youngest of us that Texas went from being just the mostly empty northern part of the Mexican state of Cohuila-Texas to the independent Republic of Texas with the signing of this document. Like the beloved United States, from whence the spirit -and some would say impetus – of revolution had come, we won our right to be free through the force of arms, wielded by brave and bold men. Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, the despot which our Texas Forefathers overthrew was ever bit as evil and prone to predations as Britain’s George III. His one saving grace, that he invented that most American of oral fixations, chewing gum, was more than off-set by his cruelty and duplicitous nature. The self-proclaimed Napoleon of the North, he boasted an army well-officered and well-equipped that had spent the past couple of years putting down rebellions in Mexico. It wasn’t just the Texians who longed for the return to a government who respected the liberal Constitution of 1824.  (more…)

The Last Refuge Celebrates – 50,000,000 Visits!

Treehouse Hits The 50,000,000 Mark!

tree-houseThe Last Refuge – officially, The Conservative Treehouse – celebrated its fourth anniversary on February 1, 2015.  Now it’s time for another celebration (and we love celebrations) as we welcome our 50,000,000th visit!

The Tree has been approached over fifty million times, tapped for information, moved into for refuge and signed up for learning.

Fifty million times someone has said, “Self, let’s check out the Treehouse and see what’s up.”

Fifty million times someone perhaps said, “I saw that link—wonder what they’re up to….”  (more…)

OORAH! Marines Sing, "There's No God Like Jehovah!"

“Oohrah! This video of Marines singing is going to drive the secular humanists INSANE.” –-Alan West

To anyone out there who may have written California off as a lost cause,  behold this group of young Marines in their monthly Faith Warrior service at the Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California.   It’s been shared nearly 400,000 times since it first debuted on Merrie Pardee Baldwin’s Facebook last September 15th.  Baldwin wrote, “Participatory worship.  I love how excited the men get to sing this song and the camaraderie.”

DAYS OF ELIJAH

(Some of the lyrics include:)

These are the days of Elijah
Declaring the word of the Lord, yeah
And these are the days of Your servant, Moses
Righteousness being restored

These are the days of great trials
Of famine and darkness and sword
Still we are the voice in the desert crying
Prepare ye the way of the Lord!

Missouri the "Show Me" State, as in …."Show Me the Money"….

Just like clockwork, (and right on schedule!), social media was exploited to leverage the cash shakedown which is the raison d’être of the Crump con.  As in the Martin case, multiple and conflicting fundraising accounts have been quickly set up, all allegedly for the “benefit” of the Brown family:

Crump Law Firm's "GO Fund Me" page set up to collect donations for the "expenses" of the family as they "seek justice" ....
Crump Law Firm’s “GO Fund Me” page set up to collect donations for the “expenses” of the family as they “seek justice” ….

As in the Martin case – Crump seeks to retain all control of any cash that flows from this “event”.   The information posted on the GoFundMe site set up by someone claiming to be a member of Crump’s law firm staff states, “These funds will assist his family with costs that they will acquire…” (such as, paying us and our entourage!)
The site claims to have raised (as of the writing of this post), $72, 163 by 3,125 donors in 4 days.  A quick survey shows that the math doesn’t add up, but it is important to show wide-spread support for the “cause” of “seeking justice” for Mike Brown.  However, much to the anger of the “Just-Us” crowd, this doesn’t even come close to the amounts that were raised, literally, overnight, by the Support Zimmerman sites.  Similar funding sites to support the family of Officer Wilson have also been set up, but the true purposes behind the GoFundMe sites are as disparate as the versions of the actual events that have been disseminated by the Crump and the PD.

California Chrome….Why He’s One Of Us

californiachrome5-1jn3-1I doubt if there was ever a more unlikely place for a thoroughbred racing horse to hail from than Coalinga, California.  Coalinga boasts a landscape of cattle, oil wells, and these days it’s pretty much the center of the California drought.  In other words, it’s a long way from Kentucky bluegrass.

In this place many people call nowhere, California Chrome was born to a mother who had only won one single race.  Her owners, Martin and Coburn, bought Love the Chase for the grand amount of $8,000.  Then for $2,000 more they bred her with Lucky Pulpit, a horse who hadn’t won a single race of more than five furlongs.

Adding to his problems, the Triple Crown Contender’s chances were nearly derailed at birth.
