Media Records Venezuelan National Guard Shooting Demonstrators (*Warning Graphic Imagery) – *Update: Beauty Queen Shot In Head During Protest Dies…

Caracus Venuzela

A journalist working for a Venezuelan news outlet captured these images during the protests in Caracas, Venezuela, on February 12. The footage shows different scenes during the protests and it reflects the confusion that surrounded the events. At one point, men in uniforms start shooting at people out of camera view while people throw stones at the men in uniform. Strong noises of shots can be heard, along with shouts from the crowd. The next scene shows bloody images of one of the three people who died during the protests, although CNN has not been able to verify that the events happened in the order in which they are edited and cannot verify who caused the death. CNN reached out to the Venezuelan government to get reaction and is waiting for an answer. Viewer discretion is advised due to the images in this video. WATCH VIDEO HERE

The text from my friend Luis surprised me. A lawyer by training, he got his masters in urban planning from an elite Manhattan university, and had returned to Venezuela full of hope. He was hired by a local NGO working on poverty abatement issues. But now, he’s fed up.

“Nothing works. There are lines to buy everything. Prices have gone through the roof. You can’t go out at night for fear of getting shot. If you want to get married, finding a place to live is impossible. The country has become unlivable.” (more…)

Venezuela Devalues Bolivar; wipes out Ford's Latin America Profits

Venezuela, in a squeeze for hard currency, devalued its currency for foreigners another 44%, following an initial devaluation of 32% by Chavez in February.  The move is seen as a necessity to keep Venezuela from defaulting on sovereign debt when reliance on excessively high levels of public spending has been the tool of Chavez and his successor, Maduro, to maintain their grip on power.  It is the 6th such major devaluation in a decade.
The move is essentially a bookkeeping sleight-of-hand – it allows the Venezuelan central bank to balance its books by “earning” more Bolivars for its oil export sales, at a time when overall sales volume has decreased dramatically.
