The Last Refuge – officially, The Conservative Treehouse – celebrated its second anniversary on February 1, 2013.  Now it’s time for another celebration (and we love celebrations) as we welcome our 10,000,000th visitor today!

The Tree has been approached over ten million times, tapped for information, moved into for refuge and signed up for learning.

Ten million times someone has said, “Self, let’s check out the Treehouse and see what’s up.”

Ten million times someone perhaps said, “I saw that link—wonder what they’re up to….”  (more…)

SPEAK UP! (Redux)

stand-up-speak-out

Earlier today I was having a casual conversation with a long-time coworker.  We talked about this and that, and she asked me if I was following the Jodi Arias trial.

My coworker is a woman in her sixties, very well read, and is more conservative than not, I would say. (more…)

Speak Up!

We are all aware of frightening and profoundly unsettling events that are happening in our world.   We discuss these matters often here at the Tree House.  These past months we have been voicing our beliefs, and learning from one another and, I hope, each of us has been reading and studying as much as we can do about the events of the day, about the founding of our country, the causes of The American Revolution, what our Founding Fathers thought and did, and the basic documents – The Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution.  History is important, because it frames our perspective of current events.  It also reminds us why the United States of America is unique and great, and why it is important for us to do whatever we can to preserve it.

Please avoid hatespeak, angry rhetoric, vulgarity, personal attacks and condescension. If you wish to engage in vitriolic, racist, or bitter angry rhetoric, there are alternative sites on the internet more than welcoming to such considerations. But not here. Thank You.

Tomb of the Unknown ChristmasOur Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. THY WILL BE DONE, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but DELIVER US FROM EVIL.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen †

The Dodge Brothers, Government, and Taxes

On Tuesday night friends and I visited Meadow Brook Hall in Rochester, Michigan to view the Christmas finery during their annual Christmas Walk fundraiser.  Twenty years or so ago I was a volunteer docent at this beautiful mansion, which is now owned by Oakland University, and used as a conference center, for weddings, etc.  The proceeds are used to maintain the property.  The university was founded by Matilda Dodge Wilson, who gave 1,500 acres of land and $2,000,000.  The land included this mansion, stables, and another more modern home.  As well as the university, the land also now has a beautiful golf club, the Oakland University Katke Cousins.  Info about Meadow Brook, if you are interested:  http://www.meadowbrookhall.org/

Happy Birthday, Tilda!

This post is for our very dear friend and fellow Tree House administrator, WaltzingMtilda.  Where would we be without her wit, wisdom, sweetness, and just plain loveliness?  Not to mention her fine taste in tunes!  And actors!

How exciting that some of her favorite actors and singers have chosen to honor Mtilda on her special day!

It is only right that we take some time today to honor Tilda with tunes, cakes and special greetings of all kinds, including videos, original poetry and essays (if you feel so inclined) so don’t hesitate to offer your own wishes – just keep them G or PG, please! (more…)
