2)  President Obama’s warning to Syria that the use of chemical weapons would cross a “red line” for the administration drew criticism Tuesday …  The unusually direct U.S. warning on Syria’s weapons of mass destruction echoes discussion of the “red lines” that Iran must not cross in developing its disputed nuclear program.  Iran has carefully assembled nearly all the resources it needs to build a bomb without crossing the boundaries that the United States and others have drawn — such as the expulsion of international nuclear inspectors or the enrichment of uranium to levels that would fuel a nuclear bomb.   (article August 21st)

3)  Facing a stagnant economy and Republican attacks on his Middle East policy, President Obama appears to be losing some support among Jewish voters in the critical swing state of Florida, according to Jewish political activists and demographers.

Most estimates range from 3 percent to low double digits, but any slippage for Obama will be magnified by the traditionally outsized turnout of this core Democratic constituency. Jews constitute only 3 percent of the state’s population but cast their ballots in such large numbers that they can account for 7 or 8 percent of the total vote.  (article August 20th)

4)  Egypt’s Islamist president will visit the United States next month, an aide said Wednesday. The visit could serve as a step toward cementing Egypt’s longtime alliance with the U.S.  […]  Moving to reshape the former regime’s foreign policy, which many Egyptians see as too pro-Western, Morsi chose to visit Saudi Arabia as his first trip outside the country as president, followed by a visit to Ethiopia. He is also planning a trip to China and Iran.

Presidential spokesman Yasser Ali told reporters that Morsi’s three-day visit to the U.S. will begin Sept. 23. It will include stops in Washington and New York, where he will attend the U.N. General Assembly session.  (Article August 22nd)

5)   MINNEAPOLIS — Vice President Joe Biden is planning to be in Tampa, Fla., next week as Republicans open their presidential nominating convention in the city.  An Obama campaign announcement on Tuesday said Biden will be attending events in Florida on Monday and Tuesday, including a stop in Tampa on the convention’s opening day.  (Article August 21st)
