I just read an article about the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt.  First the article then my thoughts:
Egypt: Muslim Brotherhood Says it Will Scrap Peace Treaty With Israel if it Comes to Power…  Egypt’s banned Muslim Brotherhood movement has unveiled its plans to scrap a peace treaty with Israel if it comes to power, a deputy leader said in an interview with NHK TV.
Rashad al-Bayoumi said the peace treaty with Israel will be abolished after a provisional government is formed by the movement and other Egypt’s opposition parties. “After President Mubarak steps down and a provisional government is formed, there is a need to dissolve the peace treaty with Israel,” al-Bayoumi said.
Egypt was the first Arab country to officially recognize Israel and sign a peace agreement with the Israeli government in 1979. It is also a major mediator of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The Muslim Brotherhood has recently come to light amid mass anti-government protests in Egypt. Some media voiced concerns that the banned Islamic movement could eventually take power in the riot-hit Arab country.
The deeply conservative Islamic movement, which wants to move Egypt from secularism and return to the rules of the Quran, failed to win a single seat in the 2010 Egyptian parliamentary election. (Read More)
Ok, here is where Obama / Clinton / U.S. Foreign Policy, really shows….. well, ‘stupidity’ comes to mind.   I am not an expert on foreign affairs by any sense, and I mostly just read and try to educate myself, much like everyone else.  But, when this whole thing in Egypt first broke out, I couldn’t help but think sheeesh.  I wish a strong American Exceptionalist believer was in charge.   When Pant Suit was saying “We call upon Egypt to move toward democracy”…. or something.  I was thinking could you be a little more specific.  I mean seriously,  that was the same approach last year with Iran, and that didn’t work out too well did it.  Other than a bunch of folk wearing green ties and stuff, we didn’t help those folk at all.  They are right back under the heavy hand of an extremely oppressive regime, with many now dead or locked up forever in some rat-infested isolated jail cell somewhere.
Seriously, it doesn’t take a former U.S. Ambassador to figure out that between the Mubarak crew, and the ElBaradei ‘Muslim Brotherhood’ crew, there isn’t a representative voice for anything else.  The average, everyday, freedom wanting, protesters do not have a seat at any table.  They are mere pawns yearning for a better lot in life.
So when Obama first called for Mubarak to recognize reforms needed, he should have pushed a message that the U.S. recognizes freedom.  Inherent freedom, and stuck to a plan of pressure upon Mubarak to change course, telling the guy on the street we’ve got your back.  Position the United States on the side of the common folk, the person yearning to be free…..  Offer our principles, not our manipulations, and tell the people we will stand beside you, “but if you eliminate Mubarak the alternative is worse”.  Don’t prop him up, call him out.  Tell the people of Egypt, hey we agree with you and the dude does need to change.
Then when Obama via Robert Gibbs yesterday calls for the immediate removal of Mubarak, he made things worse.  Now the flippin’ Muslim Brotherhood is empowered.  If Mubarak is gone, THEY WILL TAKE OVER.  Egypt becomes the Iran of last year.  Even more oppressive, and consequently Israel is shit outta luck, about to be surrounded by wolves hell bent on their anniliation.   Why can a simpleton like me see it, yet the message from the Administration is all over the place?
Keep Mubarak in place for now.  Not because we like him, but because the alternative is much, much worse.  Sometimes you gotta eat your spinach to grow.  The crowd, the average Egyptian, loves the thought of ice-cream for dinner, but they ain’t gonna get that from El Baradei and his cohorts of cannibals.  So say that!!  Say that loudly.  Use the example of Iran (1979) to show the people of Egypt that their ire against the asshole Mubarak is well directed, but they must work within their system to get rid of him and select leaders to represent their interests.   Mubarak is up against the wall now.  If the administration puts the people first, and looks out for their interests, something good could actually come from this mess.  Damnit we need Reagan in office.  Someone who knows to talk to the people, not their leaders, and put pressure on the leaders through the people while supporting them.
Pant Suit calling for a wishy-washy democracy, while Odufus calls for Mubarak to leave is completely hypocritical and disingenuous when they know full well the vacuum will be filled with the muslim brotherhood because they are the only political force organized, and they do have a leader, yet they do not represent their majority citizens best interests.
I feel like I’m watching a community organizer trying to figure out what color of paint the kids want the YMCA, when they don’t even have a building yet.
What say you?   (much better articulated than me I hope)
