WASHINGTON — Three months after unseating a Democrat in a Palm Beach-Broward district that voted for Barack Obama, U.S. Rep. Allen West, R-Plantation, emerged tonight as one of the symbolic conservative faces of the new GOP-controlled House. Tapped by organizers of the Conservative Political Action Conference to deliver the event’s keynote address, West gave thousands of cheering activists a 30-minute call for slashing federal spending, maintaining America’s military might and defending “definitive American culture” against “multiculturalism . . . on steroids.”

Monday actually was always washday on the farm, just like the children’s rhyme indicates it ought to be. All of the clothes would be stacked in rather great heaps in the basement. My remembered washday experiences all anchor in the days after we had electricity. The running water came a little later. So the water (pre-plumbing) would be heated on the stove and carried to the washing machine, which was the standard double-roller wringer on the top, with a rinse tub to the side.

A freedom infection?…. or Wishful thinking?… (UK Telegraph) Internet providers were shut down and Facebook accounts deleted across Algeria on Saturday as thousands of pro-democracy demonstrators were arrested in violent street demonstrations. Plastic bullets and tear gas were used to try and disperse large crowds in major cities and towns, with 30,000 riot police taking to the streets in Algiers alone. (more…)

(Daily Mail) French president Nicolas Sarkozy has joined David Cameron in condemning multiculturalism as a failure. Cameron launched a scathing attack earlier this months on 30 years of multiculturalism in Britain warning that it fostered extremism. His damning verdict came just months after German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that multiculturalism in Germany had failed. Now Sarkozy has joined the growing number of European leaders who have adopted identical views on multiculturalism. (more…)
(American Thinker) Seventy four Democratic Members of Congress led by noted moderate Anthony Weiner have sent a letter to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas demanding that he recuse himself from any case before the Court related to last year’s health care bill. This follows a more muted comment by Senator Orrin Hatch suggesting the recusal of Justice Kagan on the grounds that she was Solicitor General of the United States until her appointment on August 10 last year to the Court.
